Speech Contests
By Rie
- Speech contest season is usually from August to October.
- First, we apply for the contest.
- Next, we decide the topic and write the speech in Japanese.
- Then, we translate it into English by ourselves.
- Next, we hand it in to an English teacher or the ALT teacher.
- The speech is checked, and then we start to practise it.
- Before the day, practice is hard but after you have given the speech, you feel a sense of achievement.
Speech Contest Topics
Some topics which were used this year:
- Have Consideration ? about the differences between the UK and Japan regarding disabled facilities.
- Making Memories ? about travel photography.
- Decisions, Decisions ? about deciding what to do after high school.
- What I Have to Do Now ? about international understanding.
ESS Christmas Event
By Gemma (British ALT)
On 15th December 2010, ESS held its Christmas event. We made Christmas Scottish shortbread together! :-)
Shortbread is very simple to make. Here is the recipe:
125g butter
55g sugar
180g plain flour
1. Heat the oven to 190 degrees/Gas Mark 5.
2. Beat the butter and sugar together. Add the flour and mix.
3. Make a dough which is 1cm thick and roll it.
4. Cut some shapes with cookie cutters.
5. Bake for 10-15 minutes. For thin biscuits, 5 minutes is enough.
6. Decorate with coloured icing and silver sugar balls.
Try it yourself at home! Here are some photos from our event:
